Daughter of popular actress of yesteryear Sumithra, Uma acted in several films in Tamil and Kannada. She shot to fame playing Vijayakanth's sister in Sokka Thangam directed by K Bhagyaraj. She followed it up with some good roles in movies like Kadal Pookal and Thendral opposite Parthiban.

Uma who made her debut in ‘Veeranadai’ directed by Seeman acted in a few more films but she was most talked about for her role in ‘Thendral’.
The girl who has staunchly refused to do glamour roles has remained content with just a clutch of films right now. She is presently working on ‘Rasigar Mandram’, ‘Ilakkanam’ and ‘Thodamalae’ in Tamil and Kalaharali Hoovagi in Kannada. Speaking about her decision to marry, she said, ”Many thought it was not right to marry now when I am growing in my career. But my fiancé has been quite supportive about my continuing to act. I will set up home in Mumbai but be choosy about the projects I would work in”.
